Forestry Mulching & Land Clearing in Canton, GA

Northline Forestry Group clears homesites, wooded acreage, fence lines and trails in Canton and across Cherokee County. We are based in Commerce and mulch trees and brush in place, then grade and prep the site when you are ready to build.

Land clearing in Canton

Canton sits right where Cherokee County changes character. South toward Woodstock and Holly Springs, the land is mostly neighborhoods and subdivided lots. North and east toward Ball Ground and Waleska, you still find farms, horse property and wooded tracts with room to spread out. We clear on both ends, from a half-wooded backyard to several acres someone wants turned into pasture or a homesite.

A lot of Cherokee County land changed hands in the last couple of decades, and many new owners inherited ground that has been left alone for years. Privet, sweetgum and briars take over quickly. We clear it back to something you can use, and because our background is in site development, we can tell you where the house, the driveway and the drainage will work before the first tree comes down.

Common jobs

What we clear around Canton

Homesite and lot clearing

We clear building sites across Cherokee County, open the driveway route, and grub and grade the pad when the build calls for it.

Pasture and acreage reclaiming

Old fields north of Canton that have filled in with pine and privet can be mulched back to open ground for horses, cattle or just space.

Fence line and property line clearing

We clear grown-up fence lines and property boundaries so you can survey, build fence or simply see where your land ends.

Storm cleanup on wooded land

After storms, we mulch or clear downed trees and limbs from wooded acreage, trails and field edges so the land is safe to use again.

Know the ground

Foothill ridges and river bottoms along the Etowah

The Etowah River runs right through Canton, and the land around it ranges from flat, wet river bottoms to rolling Piedmont hills and, farther north, the first real foothill ridges. Soils are mostly red clay with rock showing on the higher ground. Lake Allatoona sits in the southwest part of the county. Wooded tracts here tend to be pine and mixed hardwoods with thick privet and vines along creeks and old field edges.

Each kind of ground clears differently. River bottoms can stay soft long after rain, so we time work to dry spells and stay out of the stream buffer. Hillsides benefit from mulching because the chip layer protects the clay until grass or construction takes over. On ridges with surface rock, we take stumps to about ground level and work around the rock. Good access planning keeps the tracks from rutting your yard or driveway.

Things to know before you clear

  • Check with Cherokee County or the City of Canton, depending on where your property sits, about land disturbance permits before any grading work.
  • Land along the Etowah River and its creeks carries the state 25-foot buffer from state waters, so we keep clearing outside it unless you have approval.
  • Cherokee County is generally under the seasonal burn ban from May 1 to September 30, so plan on mulching or haul-off in summer and check with the Georgia Forestry Commission.
  • Subdivisions around Canton often have HOA rules on tree removal, so check your covenants before clearing near a lot line.

Do I need a permit to clear land in Canton, GA?

If you are grading or disturbing a lot of ground, probably yes. Permits come from the City of Canton or Cherokee County depending on your address. Sites disturbing one acre or more generally need state stormwater coverage. Simple underbrush mulching may be handled differently, so check with the right office before work starts. We can help you sort out what to ask.

Will you remove the stumps when you clear my Canton lot?

We take stumps down to about ground level with the mulcher, which is fine for pasture, yards and trails. We do not offer below-grade stump grinding. If you are building, we can grub stumps out of the pad and driveway area as part of site prep, then do light grading so the builder has a clean start.

How do you protect Etowah River frontage when clearing near Canton?

We stay out of the buffer. Georgia requires a 25-foot buffer along state waters for land-disturbing activity, and we keep our clearing outside it unless you have approval. Mulching also leaves the ground covered, which helps keep clay out of the river. On wet bottomland, we wait for dry weather so the tracks do not rut the soil.
