Forestry Mulching & Land Clearing in Cumming, GA

Northline Forestry Group clears building lots, wooded backyards, HOA common areas and acreage in Cumming and across Forsyth County. We are based in Commerce and use forestry mulching to clear cleanly, with the grading and erosion knowledge a fast-growing county demands.

Land clearing in Cumming

Cumming has grown fast, and most of the clearing work here comes from that growth. Builders need lots opened up. Homeowners in established neighborhoods want the back of their property cleaned out so they can use it. HOAs need common areas, detention pond edges and walking paths cut back. Owners of the remaining larger tracts in north Forsyth want land cleared for a new house or a few acres of open ground.

In a county with this much construction, neighbors notice mud in the street and inspectors notice silt in the creek. We bring over 30 years of sitework experience, much of it in commercial and industrial site development, so we know what a builder needs next and how to keep a cleared site from washing. Mulching leaves the ground covered, which helps a lot between clearing and construction.

Common jobs

What we clear around Cumming

Builder and residential lot clearing

We clear wooded lots for new homes in Forsyth County, mulching what we can and grubbing and grading the pad area so the builder can start.

Backyard underbrush clearing

Many Cumming homes back up to thick privet and briars. We clear the underbrush and leave the healthy trees so you can use your yard.

HOA common area maintenance

We cut back overgrown common areas, trail edges, pond banks and property lines for HOAs, with care around homes and fences.

Privet and invasive plant removal

We mulch out Chinese privet, honeysuckle and kudzu and can coordinate follow-up treatment so it does not come right back.

Know the ground

Rolling Piedmont clay between Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee

Forsyth County is rolling Piedmont land, bounded by Lake Lanier on the east and the Chattahoochee River to the south, with Sawnee Mountain rising near Cumming. The soil is red clay under a thin topsoil, and once it is bare it erodes quickly in a hard rain. Wooded lots usually carry pine and mixed hardwoods with a heavy understory of privet, honeysuckle and briars, especially along creeks and old fence lines.

Because so much of the county drains to the lake and the river, erosion control is a big part of how we clear here. We mulch in place whenever we can so the ground never sits bare. On lots headed for construction, we can grub the pad area, shape drainage and leave a clean surface for the builder. Near creeks and streams we stay outside the state buffer and check what the county requires.

Things to know before you clear

  • Forsyth County and the City of Cumming have their own land disturbance requirements, so check with the right office before any grading, especially on lots near one acre or more.
  • Many Cumming neighborhoods have HOA rules about tree removal and buffers, so check your covenants before clearing near a property line.
  • Lake Lanier shoreline is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so we work only on your private lot and you will need Corps permission for anything on Corps land.
  • Forsyth County is generally under the seasonal burn ban from May 1 to September 30, so mulching or haul-off is usually the better choice for debris; check with the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Cumming land clearing FAQ

Do you serve Cumming and all of Forsyth County?

Yes. We clear land in Cumming and throughout Forsyth County, from the lake side near Lake Lanier to south Forsyth and the north end near Coal Mountain. We are based in Commerce and serve metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Call (770) 891-0899 or email scott@northlineforestry.com for a free quote.

Do I need a permit to clear my lot in Cumming?

Often yes if you are grading, and it depends on location and size. The City of Cumming and Forsyth County each handle permits for property in their jurisdiction. Sites that disturb one acre or more generally need state stormwater coverage too. Mulching underbrush may be treated differently, so check with the county or city before we start, and check your HOA rules.

Can you clear underbrush in my Cumming backyard without taking the big trees?

Yes. Selective underbrush clearing is one of our most common jobs in Forsyth County. We mulch privet, briars, vines and small trees and leave the healthy hardwoods and pines standing. The mulch stays on the ground, so there are no burn piles and usually no haul-off. A tracked skid steer is also lighter on the ground than a dozer.

Can I burn brush after clearing land in Cumming?

Usually not in summer. Forsyth County is generally under the seasonal burn ban from May 1 to September 30, and outdoor burning needs a Georgia Forestry Commission permit the rest of the year. Local rules can add limits. That is why we mulch in place on most jobs, and we can haul debris off when you want the ground clean.
