Forestry Mulching & Land Clearing in Athens, GA

Northline Forestry Group clears underbrush, invasive plants, lots and acreage in Athens-Clarke County and nearby Oconee and Madison counties. We are based in Commerce and work for homeowners, landowners and builders.

Land clearing in Athens

Athens mixes in-town neighborhoods with wooded edges, river corridors and farm country just past the county line. Many of our Athens calls come from homeowners whose back acreage has disappeared under privet, kudzu and fallen trees. Others come from families with larger lots who want to reclaim space for a garden, a shop building or just a yard they can use.

Outside Athens-Clarke, Oconee County has seen steady residential growth, with larger lots and estate homes, while Madison County is still mostly farms and timber. We work in all three. In Oconee, it is often lot clearing and selective thinning around homes. In Madison, it is more often pasture reclamation, fence lines and hunting land. Same machine, different goals, and we plan each job around what the land needs to become.

Common jobs

What we clear around Athens

Privet and kudzu removal

We mulch thick privet, kudzu and other invasives on Athens properties, especially along creeks and back lot lines, and help you plan follow-up treatment.

Selective thinning around homes

On wooded Oconee and Athens lots, we clear the brush and small trees while keeping the hardwoods you want.

Storm cleanup on wooded lots

After a storm, we clear downed trees and limbs from yards, back acreage and access paths on private property.

Farm and pasture clearing

In Madison County and the rural edges of Athens, we reclaim overgrown fields and clear fence lines for cattle and hay ground.

Know the ground

River corridors, hardwood slopes and heavy invasive growth

The North and Middle Oconee Rivers come together near Athens, and creeks wind through much of the county. Those stream corridors hold mature hardwoods like oaks, poplar and beech, but they are also where Chinese privet and Japanese climbing fern take over. Slopes down to creeks can be steep and the clay is quick to erode once it is bare, so careful clearing matters on these lots.

Georgia requires a 25-foot buffer along state waters for land-disturbing work, so we lay out stream-side jobs to stay clear of it. Mulching suits this ground well. It knocks down invasive brush without exposing raw soil, and the mulch layer slows runoff. Privet and kudzu do come back from their roots, so we talk with you about follow-up treatment, which a licensed applicator usually handles.

Things to know before you clear

  • Athens-Clarke is a unified government, so permits for land disturbance and tree work go through Athens-Clarke County, and you should check with them before clearing near a stream or a large tree.
  • Oconee County and Madison County each run their own permit offices, so check with the county where the property sits.
  • Kudzu and privet re-sprout from the roots, so plan for follow-up treatment, often herbicide applied by a licensed applicator, which we can coordinate or you can arrange.
  • Outdoor burning of vegetation needs a Georgia Forestry Commission burn permit, and local rules may be stricter in town, so mulching is usually the simpler choice.

Athens land clearing FAQ

Do you serve Athens and the surrounding counties?

Yes. We work across Athens-Clarke County and in nearby Oconee and Madison counties, including Watkinsville, Bogart, Danielsville and the farm country around them. We are based in Commerce, a short trip up the road. Tell us where the property is and what you want cleared, and we will set up a free quote.

Do I need a permit to clear land in Athens?

Sometimes. Athens-Clarke County has its own rules for land disturbance, stream buffers and tree protection, and work near a creek needs extra care because of Georgia's 25-foot state waters buffer. Sites disturbing one acre or more generally need state stormwater coverage. Check with Athens-Clarke County planning before you start, and we can explain what our work involves.

Can you get rid of privet on my Athens property for good?

We can clear it, but privet comes back from its roots unless it is treated. Mulching removes the thick growth and opens up the ground without tearing up the soil. For lasting control, plan on follow-up treatment, usually herbicide by a licensed applicator, as new sprouts appear. We can coordinate that or you can arrange it yourself.

Is forestry mulching safe near the Oconee River and creeks in Athens?

Yes, when it is planned right. Mulching leaves a layer of ground-up wood on the soil, which helps limit erosion compared with bulldozing. We stay out of the 25-foot state waters buffer for land-disturbing work and keep the machine off soft stream banks. If you are unsure where the buffer falls, check with the county.
